Caramels

Ingredients

1 cup of butter or margarine

1 pound (2 1/4 cups) of brown sugar

dash of salt

1 cup of light corn syrup

(1) 15-ounce can sweetened condensed milk

1 tsp. of vanilla

*Melt butter in heavy 3 quart saucepan. Add brown sugar and salt; stir til thoroughly combined. Stir in light corn syrup; mix well. Gradually add milk, stirring constantly. Cook and stir over medium heat til candy reaches firm ball stage (245 degrees), about 12 to 15 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla. Pour into buttered 9x9x2 inch  pan. Cool and cut into squares. Makes about 2 1/2 pounds.
